Muskogee Announces Athletic Personnel Changes
MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Muskogee Public Schools announced personnel changes within the athletic department for the 2019-2020 school year on Thursday.
Athletic Director Garrett Davis will be reassigned to an administrative role for the upcoming school year, which will be determined at a later date. Davis will continue to serve as Athletic Director through the remainder of the school year. In his time as athletic director, Muskogee has seen over 600 student-athletes named Frontier Valley Conference All-Academic.
“Garrett has done a nice job in his five years as athletic director at Muskogee,” said Dr. Jarod Mendenhall, Superintendent of Muskogee Public Schools. “Through conversations with Mr. Davis he has professional goals outside of athletics and moving out of the role of athletic director will help him accomplish those while still benefiting the district.”
Shonika Breedlove has stepped down as the head girls basketball coach of Muskogee High School. Breedlove will remain within the district as an educator. An alumni of Muskogee High School, she most recently completed her third season leading the girls basketball team. The former Rougher served as an assistant coach from 2008 until being named head coach in 2016. Prior to returning to Muskogee, Breedlove was the head coach at Boynton-Moton from 2002-2008.
“Shonika is a Rougher through and through. I am appreciative of her time spent leading our program and always doing so in a first-class manner,” explained Dr. Mendenhall. “I look forward to her continuing to have a positive impact on our students as she continues to serve the district as an educator.”
Wrestling Head Coach Rafael Maturino has been informed that he will not be returning as head coach for the wrestling program. Maturino just completed his second season as head coach of the Roughers with six state qualifiers and four state alternates over that span.
“We appreciate Mr. Maturino for his time leading the Rougher wrestling program and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said Dr. Mendenhall.
Dr. Mendenhall said that “We will actively pursue an athletic director that can lead the athletic department and take us to new heights. The new athletic director’s first order of business will be hiring head coaches for these two programs that will help achieve that goal.”
All three positions will be posted to the school district website following spring break. Interested candidates should visit www.muskogeeps.org.
