Letter from Dr. Mendenhall Regarding End of School Year
May 22, 2019
Dear Rougher Family,
I am writing to inform you that school will not be in session on Thursday, May 23, 2019. This day will not be made up by the students or staff, so the 2018-2019 school year has ended as of today. All Muskogee Public School sites and buildings will be closed for the next two days – Thursday, May 23, 2019 and Friday, May 24, 2019.
There are many families in our community that have been affected by the flooding and I want everyone to focus on their families and neighbors. I know our friends in Ft. Gibson received more flood waters than the Muskogee community, so I encourage you to help those that you know in their community.
I have spoken to the Muskogee Emergency Management team which indicated that flooding will continue for the next few days and water will continue to rise making it difficult to maneuver through the low-lying areas. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has indicated that Highway 62 will eventually close when the flood waters reach the road. I encourage everyone to stay tuned to the news and be safe.
Teachers and staff will report back to work on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Due to the movement across the district, this will be an uninterrupted workday for all teachers in their classrooms. The last contract day for teachers will be Thursday, May 30th. At this time, graduation is still scheduled for Friday evening May 24th at 7:00 p.m. at the Muskogee Civic Center.
I realize this has been an unusual turn of events, but I feel this is the best decision for our students and staff. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
Dr. Jarod Mendenhall
