Whittier Elementary Walks the Yellow Brick Road to Healthy Choices
MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Students and Staff at Whittier Elementary combined the school’s Wizard of Oz theme for the year with National Red Ribbon Week to use their brain and learn how to take care of the heart they have and have the courage to make good choices.
Throughout Red Ribbon Week the school observed healthy choices with awareness days related to the qualities and characters of Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 musical fantasy film featuring Dorothy, Toto the dog, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion.
Themes included “Be Kind like the Tinman and Don’t Be A Bully”, “Have a Brain like the Scarecrow and Take Care of Your Body”, “Be a World Wide Web Wizard”, “Be Courageous like the Lion and Say No to Drugs”, “You've had the Power All Along!” (self-esteem), and “There’s No Place like Home to Make Healthy food choices.”
Students and Staff had fun dressing up with the themed days and learning more about making healthy choices with visits from MPD K-9 officers, MPS Nutrition Education Coordinator Brandi Stevenson, and Whittier counselor Mrs. Mutch.
