Mondays with Mendenhall - March 9, 2020
This past week was Read Across America which correlates with Dr. Seuss’ birthday and has become the nation’s largest celebration of reading. In recognition of this week, I had the privilege of reading to students throughout the district. It was great to see pictures of school board members, administrators and community members participating in Read Across America.
As you know, literacy has become our highest priority as a district. We are working diligently to ensure that every child is reading on grade level by third grade. In this endeavor, Reading Recovery is a district literacy program focused on first graders that are more than two years behind. I just received data indicating that 16 first graders, after going through the Reading Recovery program, are now reading on grade level.
I want to take this opportunity to thank those teachers that have been working with these students, and give them the gift of reading and the opportunity to learn for a lifetime. Thank you for your time, commitment and passion to these kids.
I know that everyone is ready for a break so I’d like to wish each of you a happy and restful Spring Break!
