Muskogee Names Travis Hill Head Football Coach
Launch the media gallery 1 playerMUSKOGEE, Okla. - Muskogee Public Schools will hold a Special Board of Education meeting Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Noon to vote on hiring Travis Hill as Head Football Coach of Muskogee High School.
“I am happy to announce that I will be recommending Travis Hill to the Board of Education as our new Head Football Coach at Muskogee High School,” said Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall. “Coach Hill is a proven winner and clearly understands the expectations of taking the program to the next level.”
“I am extremely excited. You look at the rich tradition of Muskogee Football, this town is built around football success and always has been. As a young man growing up in Northeastern Oklahoma, in the Tulsa area, you were always aware of the tradition of Muskogee Rougher Football,” said Coach Hill. “To get the opportunity to lead this tradition rich program is exciting for me and my family.”
Hill served as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Muskogee High School for the 2020 season. Prior to rejoining the Muskogee coaching staff, Hill spent three seasons at Broken Arrow High School as the Defensive Coordinator, where he helped lead the Tigers to their first football state championship in school history.
“Our vision is that we have big goals and big aspirations. It all starts right now with the work in the offseason,” explained Hill. “We have to develop these kids and to give them 100-percent for us to go out and win football games. We are starting the process to develop championships."
Prior to his time at Broken Arrow, Hill was the defensive coordinator for Muskogee from 2015-2017. As an assistant, the Roughers reached the state semi-finals in 2016. Hill spent nearly four years working in the private sector before joining Muskogee in 2015.
“We are ecstatic about Travis Hill coming on board as our new Head Coach. Travis brings an experience level and football expertise that is extremely hard to find. His ability to positively motivate high school student athletes is unmatched and sets him apart,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Jason Parker.
Hill was the head coach of Tulsa East Central High School from 1998-2011. In 14 years as head coach of the Cardinals, Hill led East Central to 14 state tournament appearances including a Class 5A State Championship in 2005 and compiled a 138-34 record. His teams at East Central reached the state semifinals seven times including three championship appearances.
“I’d like to acknowledge our young men within the football program. The little bit I’ve worked with them as the interim head coach, they’ve been excited and ready to go,” added Coach Hill. “I’d like to thank my Savior, my wife and my family, the administration, the faculty, and the community for their support and I’ll get the opportunity to reach out to those people in the coming months. You don’t get an opportunity like this without support.”
A 1980 graduate of East Central High School, Hill was an assistant coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for ten seasons helping the Norseman to a National Championship in 1991 before taking the helm at his alma mater. He began his coaching career in 1985 as an assistant coach at Stillwater High School.
A graduate of Northeastern State University, Hill has coached numerous players who have played collegiately and professionally. Hill’s pupils include former New Orleans Saint Charlie Clemmons, former Oakland Raider Carl Kidd, Oklahoma State’s Sim Drain, University of Tulsa defensive end Popsey Floyd, Arkansas Razorbacks’ David Gordon and Kameron Curl currently of the Washington Football Team, and the University of Alabama’s Matt Parker.
Muskogee Public Schools will hold a press conference at 12:30 p.m. at the Education Service Center (202 W. Broadway). A Google Meet link will be provided for local media unable to attend in person.
