History was made this morning at Muskogee High School as the access road in front of the high school, formerly E. Shawnee Road, was officially renamed Rougher Road.
The ceremony kicked off Homecoming Week with energy and excitement as students, staff, city leaders, and community members gathered for the new Rougher Road sign reveal. Mayor Patrick Cale spoke about the road’s significance, and MHS students proudly unveiled the sign.
The vision for Rougher Road started with Terri Brossett, MHS administration, and the MHS Student Leadership Council, who turned a long-standing tradition into reality. Brossett explained that students have been calling the access road “Rougher Road” since MHS moved to its current location in 1967. She worked with the Student Leadership Council to formally request an honorary street designation from the City of Muskogee. The Muskogee Public Works Committee approved the request, paving the way for this morning’s celebration.
MHS senior Emerson Toney reflected on the significance of the moment:
"I am so proud of everything we’ve done the past couple of years. The leadership council as a whole is so proud to be a Rougher."
The new name reflects the heart of Muskogee High School’s identity and connects directly to this year’s Homecoming theme, “Rougher Road Trip.” For students and alumni, Rougher Road represents both a physical place and a lasting symbol of community pride.
Muskogee Public Schools extends gratitude to the City of Muskogee, the leadership team at Muskogee High School, and the many community members who made this vision a reality.
