Muskogee 8th & 9th Grade Academy is giving students a unique opportunity to strengthen their math skills through the Teach For America Ignite program. Led by math teacher Emily Lewis, a 2019 TFA Greater Tulsa alum, the program connects students with college student tutors from across the country.
“The program gives my students a valuable opportunity to address learning gaps during the school day, which significantly enhances their confidence in math,” Lewis said. Initially skeptical about connecting virtually, she has been impressed by how students look forward to their sessions. “That connection makes all the difference.”
Each tutor brings their own experiences and expertise, focusing on essential math skills while also sharing about their college majors, career paths, and current events. This exposure helps students learn about opportunities beyond their community and broadens their worldview.
For Lewis, the most inspiring part is seeing the dedication and care tutors invest in every lesson. “Students build confidence in math and are more eager to tackle difficult problems because the tutors invest in them so personally,” she said.
Since 2022, nearly 700 TFA Ignite tutors have provided over 20,000 additional learning hours, contributing to growth in math and English while earning a 94% positive impact rating from partner schools. Programs like Ignite are helping reimagine education in Oklahoma, combining academic support with meaningful human connection.
